my dog has dry flaking skin ..?

the vet said it was due to his body adjusting to the wether in Canada, as he is from Louisiana.
but- it looks yukky and he obviously flakes all over the place. ive tried brushing him, but it seems to make it worse. Ive tried bathing him and it helps for a day or two- but you cant bath a dog more than about every 6 weeks. how long will it take my dog to adjust to the new environemtn, and what can i do in the meantime?? HELP!

Hi There;

You can actually bath a dog more then every six weeks. You just have to make sure that you are using a professional quality dog shampoo.It almost sounds like your dog has what is called walking dandruff. My first reaction would be to flea shampoo him and wash all his bedding etc. Walking dandruff is actually a mite which feeds on dead skin however sometimes it is over produced and causes more dandruff then what it can eat. Therefore flea shampoo kills this mite as it is a pesticide. The other thing I would reccommend is having the dog flea shampooed at least once more three weeks from the first one.

The only other reccommendation that I can make on this condition is to make sure you or your groomer are using a sensitive skin shampoo if the above treatment doesn't help.

Hope this helps. If you need any more information please just post to me
You should try using a good shampoo for humans. Try either Nioxin or Regenix (which seems to cure dandruff) for the poor pooch. There is no harm in using any human shampoo on him, particularly if it helps make him more comfortable.
try not giving him a bath so often
Go to your local pet shop and check out the skin supplements there. You will probably find some clear capsules that you can poke a hole in and pour over his dog food. This will help. And get a sensitive skin dog shampoo or puppy shampoo and a conditioner for dry skin for dogs and bathe him weekly until it is better. Give the capsule contents daily. I dont know what brands they offer in Canada. DO NOT use human shampoos on your dog. The ph balance is very different in human skin and dog skin and you could cause his skin to burn or make him sick licking himself dry afterward .
They have wonderful dog shampoos and conditioners for dry skin at your pet shop.
My 3 month old Beagle has the same problem and the vet stated it is due to weather and environment changes. He suggested mixing some cod liver oil in her dog food and that will help.
I don't know if this is even good to try but i did it and it worked.I added to the dog's dry food a teaspoon of olive oil and mix once a day for a while and it worked. I never asked the vet but feel free to mention it. Good luck.
Using a shampoo for humans can also dry out their skin. And I would think you would give your dog a bath more than every 6 weeks, if you don't, doesn't your dog stink? Make sure you get all the soap off your dog. It might not be dry skin, it might be dander, a soap build up.
depending on what kind of dog it is, you can bathe the dog every week. use a oatmeal shampoo. don't use a detergent based one.
Try and not bathe him as much. Try a lamb and rice food, it's really good for the skin. You may want to put some fish oil in his food too, just a tablespoon. This will help there skin. My three pugs have skin problems and this seems to work the best.
