My dog has scabs on his ears that he keeps scratching. What do you think it is?

Answers:
Usually just flees or ear mites. To make him stop scratching you can buy a neck cone or you can put vasoline on it.. it will make it sticky and he'll get it on his foot. Also you want to try and treat the ear mites or fleas with propper medicine.. If you have more than one dog it might be from their rough housing.. i know my 2 1 yrold lab dal mixes have horrible scabs in their ears because they're constantly biting each other on the ears
must be iching
could be flea bites. look carefully at his hair.part it and look at the bare skin.see any black dust-like specks? that would be from the fleas.
Fleas
if it is an outside dog it could be from the flys biting or scratching him, that happend to my dog, go to a vet or pet store for cream that will repel the flys (it may be for horses but it works)
It could also be ear wax buildup. One of my dog's ears always get filled up with wax really quickly - and he's a large dog, so it is really hard to hold him down to put the drops in his ears and clean it out.

So what I look for is him turning himself upside down and rubbing his head on the floor. Then I know the ear wax has built up again and is bothering him.
it is some sort of skin infection and a hot spot of itching makes it worse and worse and maybe a worse skin problem will set in. I know of a cat who itched and got a bad skin infection from those claws. I really would take the dog to the vet and get some medicine or salve that you put on the ears and keep up doing it. Does your dog have fleas? I wonder if fleas are making it itch. You have to put something to take care of it on those ears and not over the counter either..shirgy
scabs on ears usually mean fly bites put some antiseptic on them and spray or rub his or her ears with an insect repellent and repeat daily till it heals
All of the answers could be correct you never know untill you get him to the vet, and in all cases it could be a serious condtion.
You didn't mention what part of the ears have scabs on them. If it is in the inside of the ear near the ear canal it could be ear mites or an ear infection. If it is on the tips of his ears it could be fly bites. I have German Shepherds and the nasty black stable flies bite the ends of the dogs ears. These flies are biting flies and will suck blood and cause great discomfort to your dog. These flies also bother the daylights out of horses. If it is the flies that are causing the problem, there is a product called "Flies Off" and you can pick it up where you get horse supplies or sometimes pet stores carry it. I use the pump spray and the dogs tolerate it better than the aerosol version. If the problem is in the inner part of the ear please seek your Veterinarian's attention there are medications to relieve the inflammation.
He probably has ear mites, you need to take him to the vet.
