my dog bit 2 dogs and an owner..need advice?

my awesome dog rocky(half black lab, half pit bull) got out of my house coz someone left the back gate open so he attacked 2 dogs and 1 of them got sent 2 the hospital. the owner stuck his hand in the middle of everything and got bit. my dog does NOT bite humans at all..his hand was at the wrong place at the wrong time thats all. but anyways..he got taken by the pound because this is the 2nd incident with my dog and theyre keeping him for 10 days and when i pick him up hes gonna be declared "vicious"..what exactly does this mean and what will happen if this happens again? hes a great dog, loyal to the core..loves people..super friendly and everything but hates other dogs. ive had him for about 8 or 9 years now..hes part of the family.
Answers:
If he is declared vicious, he will have to wear a muzzle any time he is out of the house..If he is caught outside of your home without a muzzle he will be put down. .. that is whether he is on a leash or not.

the leash can't be more than 4 feet long..
You have to display a sign on your properly that there is a vicious dog..

I read several vicious dog ordinances, and those are the rules that they all agreed on.. so your county is likely to have similar rules..
If it happens again he will be put down because he is labeled vicious. Now you know you have to be very careful now and watch your dog closely. Especially that you know he doesnt like other dogs. An incident happened with my german shepperd.a kid has been teasing him and he is on an electric fence and the kid came on my property and my dog like he is trained bit him. The parents tried to sue and tried to have my dog put down but the court and the police officers said that the parents were in the wrong and the kid was as well because he came onto my property and the kid was teasing my dog and my dog was on a electric fence. So I have no sympathy for that kid. But your situation is differant because your dog left your property which makes it your responsibilty. Even though your dog never bites humans he bit that one and therefore you have to deal with the harsh consequences. They are unfair but by them labeling your dog vicious they are giving your dog his last chance.
but kids is better
maybe you should take them to dog school
a lot of dogs can change so maybe you should give it a go
obedience school or adoption.u only have two options the way i see it.the first one is about $1100 - 1500.the second one is free..gl..
It's time to send dear old Rocky to doggie heaven.
train dogs right and there won't be a problem.
i don't know the workings of the legal system regarding this, but all i could suggest would be to have him neutered if he's not already. he probably thinks he's being protective and guarding your turf.
if This happens again no doubt the dog will have to be put down, but if as you say he is a friendly dog , it should not happen again
At 9yrs old it's going to be tough to train Rocky. If you are lucky and get the dog back then a muzzle might be a good option?
A dog should never bite a human, if he has done it once, whos to say he wont do it again, a child might be "in the wrong place at the wrong time"?
I love dogs by the way, got a Boxer, not one nasty bone in her body, but if she ever bit anyone I would think about the needle.
Have your dog put to sleep before he bites a kid's face off. By the way, the guy's hand was not in the wrong place at the wrong time, your mutt was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
8 or 9 years whatss that in doggy years
maybe hes an insecure dog in his older years
does he only beat up girl dogs or boy dogs
maybe he is VICIOUS meaning this is HIS natural way of behaving unlike some dogs that are caring like LASSIE oh thats a movie and well trained doggy
my doggy is a mutt but only BARKS and intimidates when PROVOKED
If you love your pet and do not want to put it down, then.

If your dog does a good thing Prasie it with a treat,
when it bites punish it by flicking it on the nose.

After a few weeks your dog will be you best friend that dosen't bite!
Well i have two german shepards and i know quit a lot about dogs andi love dogs a lot too, so anyway what i think is that your dog felt that the person was gonna harm u or the person is bad in some way, because if your dog is nice and friendly it wont just randomly bite ppl, right? Dogs have super sensitive noses so they can feel if a peron has positive or negative energy.!! :D!! hope that helps you.. xoxoxo
I understand about being part of the family .. I have two fourlegged girls

Is he fixed ? That might be something you would like to consider as it will calm him down a bit ..also there is a very good animal board on http://www.ryze.com
called It's a Dog's Life network
the man you wish to address is
Christopher Aust he is an Owner, Trainer and Behaviorist

Best of luck to you . keep that big fella close to you from now on .
First off how can you say the owner had his hand in the wrong place at the wrong time? He was trying to save his dogs and most people here would do that too. Not to be mean but I hope you got the vet bill for that one.

Vicious is not a good thing. It's too bad he's a senior dog because he needs socialization and training and he may be a bit old at this point for it to really sink in.

Hope this works out for you.
Once labeled vicious and he bites again..he will be killed. Now you will have to be diligent and not allow your dog outside unattended. When taking him for walks he should be leashed and muzzled. You have to take all precautions against your dog attacking again. You've already let him attack twice that we know about), the third time is the charm. Too many owners are not diligent enough when it comes to their dogs. You have to be watchful of free roaming dogs running up on your dog (whether friendly or not), hence, the muzzle.
I've faced similar situations before.when somebody leaves the gate open.
It is important to prevent this from happening again. May be install something like a automatic door closer kind of mechanism so that the gate will never be left open. Let him not pay for our lapses.
This is exactly why I have the e-fence .I know my hubby and son would leave the gate open and my dogs would get out .Tigger does not like other dogs.

The point i'm getting at is to secure your dog better ,get a e-fence that goes underground and your dog wears a collar. If he gets to close to the boundry he'll get a slight correction.Put this on the inside of your fence . Some people I know also use a hot wire to put on the inside of their fence so their dog can't get out.Same thing ,if the dog gets to close the dog gets a correction. This will protect your dog from getting out and please be extremely diligent about the gate being left open.

The vicious dog laws i'm not to sure about them . From reading I know in public in certain places the dog must wear a muzzle ,and have a leash only a certain length. If the dog bites again ,they'll pts the dog.
My best advice is to check all gates etc. to make sure they are secure. Stay out with him while he is outside. However, you can also use a soft muzzle on him while he is outside. But at this point depending on the area you live in your Pit is in danger of being "put down". Post on your property to beware of dog, stay with him while he is outside and place a soft muzzle on him. Keep us posted on what happens once he is "let out of jail."
