My dog constantly licks his legs, but nothing is actually there?

It all happened after he went to the groomers. He always goes there and he is usually fine. But this time, he came back licking his whole body, but especially his legs.he does it ALL THE TIME. It's bad!! I'm worried about him! I don't see any irritation though. What could this be? Could it be from something the groomers did? Or is a food allergy (I recently changed his food)? I'm not sure if vet expertise is a must or not in this situation.
Answers:
1. The dog food
2. The shampoo
3. Stress

Change back to the original dog food, give him a bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo and take him for a walk and then spend a little more time with him. Take him to the pet store and buy him a toy that he likes. Provide things he can chew, instead of licking his legs. Benadryl will work for the first few days but don't use it for more than three days.

If there is no improvement then take him to the vet.
it's outdoor allergys, i have recently found out my dog is on meds no..not expencive about $30 for 2 months
He probably has an allergy to something that the groomer used. My dog licks the bottom of his paws constantly, and when I look to check them out, I don't ever see anything. I started to give him Benedryl Allergy, and it has stopped the licking. The vet said you can give the dog 1 mg per pound of Benedryl. Hope I helped!
Yeah it could be allergies or dry skin. Probably he is allergic to the shampoo they used on him.
good luck.
Most likely allergies. Not sure if its food allergies or outdoor type.
My dog has that also, but its not food related. He keeps picking on a particular spot also. They sell cortisone/ allergy spray at walmart, that will help him from itching that spot. Seems to help a little. I would try that.
How long was he away at the groomers?

A friend of mine once had a dog who suffered from separation anxiety. If they left him alone for too long, which could be anywhere from a few hours to a day, he would begin to lick his legs. Like you said, there would be no sign of any irritation, but he just constantly licked.

Not only that, but once he was reunited with his people, he would continue the behavior for some time, which eventually caused sores on his joints.
maybe it is one of the things u just said take him to a vet
call your groomer and ask if they used something different and ask how much a allergroom bath would cost. Allergroom is wonderful for allergies. If you changed food that could cause the licking ecspecially on the feet. Try a lamb or duck diet.If the allergroom bath doesnt work call the vet.
I know they lick for splinters. Sounds unlikeley though
Yep, outdoor allergies. =) My dog is going through the same thing, and i'll be calling the vet about it shortly. My dog does it about the same time every year (fall)..the medicine helps him immensely. =)
i heard something like this on the radio.
The expert thought it is probably pain.
could be like a pinched nerve and the pain is really coming from another place. referred pain i think they called it.
it might be something on the groomers shop.different shompoo maybe?.if he is doing this for a while. my recomendation is to take him to the vet
If he's a small dog, he's probably just paranoid. I know my little dog didn't start this habit until she was stung by a bee (now she thinks there's bugs on her). For a small dog, it doesn't take much to start a bad habit. If he's a big dog, try taking him to the vet. If there's nothing wrong, maybe the groomers switched shampoos or didn't get all of it off.
We have two dogs and they both have a bad habbit of licking their paws. We paid for the visit to the vet and in compliance to most of your other answers our dogs too have allergies. I also noted that someone else does what we do. We buy children's chewable benadryl and we break it into four pieces and give each of them a piece and it really seems to help (we have both a larger dog and a smaller sized dog.) It is perfectly safe and it is cheaper than going out and buying perscriptions. Although if you notice it persists take the dog to the vet better safe than sorry. Besides that I would first try changing the dog food back if you notice your dog stops licking you know the answer. Also call and see if they changed anything at the groomer ie: shampoo, laundry soap they wash their towels in, ect. Hope I helped.
probably an allergic reaction to something the groomers used, make sure you watch him carefully if he licks too much sores will start to form and that will make the situation much worse, i would atleast call your vet and just ask someone there what they think would be best, if it is a good vet they will tell you if you should come in or not if it is not and what is best, good luck
it could be allergies, BUT my dog did the same thing when i first got her. she started licking her back paw and then starting chewing it. it turns out that she had mites.but not full ones. so i gave her a little medication ointment and then it went away. so just go to the vet and make sure.
