Call your vet!!Symptoms of Chocolate Dog Ingestion and Poisoning
You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting.
This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.
Knowing which chocolate is the most toxic is important, but leaves one wondering how much must be eaten to poison a dog. The list in this box should be helpful. Maybe you can clip it and post it on your refrigerator?
*White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog. *
I've had quite a few dogs that love chocolate, and seem to get into it whenever I have it, I don't think it's much to worry about unless she starts acting wierd. That little of an amount shouldnt hurt her. You could call a 24 hr vet hotline though and ask?
yes, although she might have the runs.
You need to call your vet immediately. The caffeine in chocolate can cause serious damage to your dog's heart, including causing a heart attack. Your vet may want to see the dog today to counteract any effects of the chocolate.
get ready to clean up -- usually it comes flying out the back end -- dogs are allergic. She will surely recover though
Keep an eye on her %26/or contact your vet %26 get his/her oppinion.Id also be concerned about the foil wrap on the candy.
In case folks dont know,,chocolate is toxic to dogs.It can effect the liver %26 kidneys.
Probably so..If a dog is given chocolate in excessive amounts it can raise their heart rate and kill them, but my dogs have eaten chocolate before without gettin sick at all, so I think it's safe to say that your chiuahua will be just fine:)
some people feed chocolate to dogs all the time and they are alive.
Was it milk or dark? How much? To be safe you can make her vomit by feeding her bread soaked in Hydrogen peroxide and take her for a stroll in the back yard (she'll puke in a few min) Dark chocolate is very bad. There have been cases of puppies eating whole boxes of milk chocolate and not having any problems except diarrhea for a few days. My own dogs (2 boston terriers) ate a whole chocolate cake while we were asleep and had no problems. I'd make her puke just to be on the safe side.
Put her outside for a while, in case she gets the runs, but she should be okay.
You're dog should be okay, but it will have troubles going to the bathroom. It might not make it outside. You might want to watch it for about a day or two.
and you are sitting here typing this WHY??
NO, she wil not be all right. You need to get up, back away from the keybrd, get the dog, get the car and go, get thee to the nearest vet, PRONTO!
Chocolate, dogs: no mix, no do well. Doggy go bye-bye!
Please, seek medical attention quickly!
Chocolate is another snack that should not be given to your dog. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is the toxic ingredient contained in chocolate that harms your dog. The toxic dose of chocolate is 100-150 mg of theobromine per kilogram of dog. For a 60 pound dog, a toxic dose of chocolate is 60 ounces of milk chocolate, 18 ounces of semisweet chocolate, or 6 ounces of unsweetened chocolate. The the first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and nausea. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures. If you believe your puppy or dog has eaten a considerable amount of chocolate, you should bring him to a vet right away.
Just a few M%26Ms killed my precious Pug.. You really need to call your vet..
She might get a little sick, but she won't die. My best friend's chihuahua eats chocolate all the time, and that dog is perfectly normal.
My dog is only 10lbs and she ate a whole peice of chocolate cake that my brother droped! so you shouldn't have to worry but, still you might want tocall the vet just to make sure
It was not that much so I would not worry. All my dogs have gotten into some chocolate at sometime or another. It may give her a tummy ache but she should be fine.
i am sure she will be, my old dog busted mutt ate three Heineken bottles and we did not find glass or blood anywhere. crazy, but true.
I don't know that much about Chachuahuas, but she should be fine. She may not be though. If she starts refusing to eat, being less active, or anything unusual try taking her to the vet.
Being that your dog is small and eating chocolate is not good for any pet. You should take her to your vet. Because Chocolate is poisen to dogs no matter how big they are. So by takeing her to the vet they can make her through up and make any of the remaining chocolate leave her system.
If you want to be sure she is okay, call your vet. Dark chocolate is more potent than milk chocolate. In my opinion (I have three dogs) she should be fine.
keep an eye on her to see if she acts any different. some dogs are affected by chocolate some arent
yea
If she starts acting sick take her to the vet,but Hershey Kisses are so small they shouldn't hurt her.
I own a chihuahua, and when it was a pup it had eaten some chocolate. He was fine, he did have diariah though, so just a fair warning.
thats a bad thing!! dogs aren't supossed to eat chocalate and if he/she is 5lb.s thats bad! take he/she to the vet. I hope this helps!
This biggest thing that keeps coming to mind here is this. If people really are worried about their dogs, due to some possible medical condition, Dont ask people on the internet, TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET, or call the vet and find out what you can do, or should do!
u need to take her to the vet asap because chocolate is deadly and even the smallest amount can be terrible. she needs to go now so call ur emergency vet and they can either give u meds or if it is really bad get her stomache pumped. doog luck with her!
