My dog eats rocks out of the yard, how do I stop this !?

I have a 4 year old shih-tese, and he actually eats rocks, I know because he threw up about six of them a couple of days ago. I couldn't believe how big they were. When I see him chewing, when he is out side I scold him, but it doesn't seem to help he's still eating them, what can I do?? He has already broken several of his front teeth out.

I think I would probably muzzle him when he goes outside.

all you can do is watch hiim very closely and correct him everytime he does this. He will learn after a while that it is not appropriate activity to do.

Take cayene pepper and mix it with some water. Then coat the rocks outside. Your dog won't be able to stand the smell.

Ask the vet for some of the habit breakers. Or keep him away from the rocks.

actually, that is strange. have you talked to your vet about this? sometimes when dogs eat strange objects like rocks it could mean that there's more going on internally than you know about. I would talk to your vet.
I would DEFINITELY talk to your vet to rule out a medical problem BEFORE you try to "correct him"

Buy some peppermint candy making oil (Wilton brand can be found at wal-mart), and put a tiny bit on your finger, and put it on his tounge when he eats rocks, it won't hurt him but the oil without the other candymaking supplies doesn't taste very nice.

if you have cable, you should watch The Dog Whisperer. there was a dog who was so obsessed with rocks, that he'd chew on them break his teeth and his paws would be all bloody. any way, so the dog psychologist told the owners to step in between the dog and rock because it shows dominance. and dogs work in packs, so you, as the owner has to be the pack leader. but he also advises that people don't try these techniques without a professional. so, maybe contact a real certified dog psychologist, a trainer, or a vet.

Bring a huge big rock and offer him to eat it maybe you have a monster and not a dog ..

You can always throw away the rocks in ur back yard:) or you can lay treats instead of rocks on the garden or u can pour some thing foul smelling over the rocks. (that dogs dont like)
