The vet said No people food
Have to buy Sentiental once a month pills to control feas, other pests and avoid heartworm I am at present usingt Prevention and heart guard. any problem to continue with them?
My friend says this is not true. A small bite of meat or veggie will not hurt the dog and the vet is pushing the expensive pills as she gets a commission
What is your expwerience?

Hey, I'm a Vet Tech. I can give you the full skinny on this issue. Lots of folks ask this question, so here it goes:
Heartworms kill. Treating heartworms is about $1000 and 6 weeks of cage rest for your dog. That means the dog can't be or do anything but sit in a crate for 6 weeks. You carry them to the bathroom, then right back into the crate. You can imagine how happy that makes the dog. Exersize of any kind during the treatment can kill them. It's MUCH better to prevent this disease.
Granted, it's passed through mosquitos, which go dormant in cold weather, but the medicine also treats other things. Namely, fleas which are always a problem in our warm homes. It's cheaper in the long run to prevent flea infestations, that to have to stop them. For both fleas and mosquitos, there is no predicting when the infestations will begin in spring, so it's best to keep the protection going all year.
As to people food, I think a little won't hurt. Go by her weight. Sometimes those little dogs get so fat they can barely walk. Keep in mind that people food is richer and has more spices and things that may upset the dog's tummy. Diarrhea and vomiting are common to people food treats.
Let me know if you have anymore questions.
people's food is a no-no.get dog food..or cook for your dog..rice + deboned chicken, beef..with carrots and peas
Did your friend go to veterinary school?? Do you love your dog?? Do what the vet suggests. SOme dogs are super sensitive and people food can really mess with their systems. It is also bad for teeth and does not meet all of their nutritional needs. You can probably look up recipes if you want to cook for your dog, but I would listen to the vet. Your friends means well, but sometimes friends don't know everything (even though they have an opinion about it all!) Take care!
