They are not terribly dirty but I think cleaning them would be cooling for him.

When my dogs ears become really red it usually indicates he has a ear infection. He usually indicated also by scratching and shaking his ears. I would definitely seek the advice of a vet before doing anything. Ears do not usually turn red because they are dirty, although they should be cleaned periodically.
You could use a little bit of water and little bit of peroxide like a cap full and pour it in his ear then rub it around really good then wipe off the excess.
the best way to clean them is to go to a vet and find out why his ears are red and then ask the vet if it is safe to clean them and if he can do it for you.
If they are just red and not painful then i would let them go, but if he does have some debris, then get a good ear cleaner, malecitic otic is a pretty good one, i think can only be purchased through veterinarian. Then fill the ear with solution massage at the base of the ear, let him shake his head the wipe out with a cotton ball. Don't just use any ear cleaner make sure that it has a drying agent in it, especially if your boxer's ears aren't cropped, because if they stay moist then you may cause him to get a yeast infection in his ear, and those aren't easy to get rid of.
it would be ok to use peroxide and then get ya some benedryl cream or even childrens benedryl and give to him according to weight. hope this helps..allergies are no fun at all!
Take him to the vet as it could be a yeast infection. If the vet finds an infection, ask him to clean the ears out for you and then use the medicine he gives oops charges you for. Otomax is frequently used for ear infections. It is expensive for the size of the tube but it works.
Good luck.
