My dog ate half of a turtle, omg! She brought it to me when I went outside to get her like it was a present. I was quite disgusted (turtles never hurt any1) and told her she was a bad dog. Will she get sick from this? Unfortunately the turtle didn't make it.

Turtles carry samonella, I would worry. Get her into the vet asap. She could get very sick and pass it off to you in her feces/ and saliva. Salmonellosis is well recognized as a zoonosis associated with many species of reptiles. In the 1970s, it was estimated that 280,000 human cases of salmonellosis/year were associated with reptiles, leading to the ban on turtles with carapace lenghts %26lt; 4 inches (i.e. would fit in a child's mouth). This led to a substantial reduction in pediatric cases of salmonellosis, but a recent study has suggested that 6% of all sporadic human cases of Salmonella infection are still associated with reptiles.

If she can't digest it, it will come back up. I know it is gross, but she was just trying to make you feel special and show you her love by bringing you a gift.

most likely yes the dog will get sick. if it ate parts of the shell, watch how much the dog eats cuz bone and things like a shell can get stuck in the dogs stomach. i had a German shepard that ate a ground hog and had to have surgery to remove the bones cuz they got stuck!
My guess is that she'll be ok. My dogs have eaten: bunnies, rats, squirrels and pretty much any other critter they can catch. They are healthy as can be. Just make sure her shots are up to date. If you see any signs of her being ill take her to the vet. Other than that, undertstand that she's a dog and has an instict to chase/kill prey. Even an innocent little turtle! And yes, it WAS a present. A gross one but she see's you as the "leader" of her pack and is rewarding you with a meal..disgusting, but true!

Awe poochie was just trying to show you that she loved you. As for getting sick don't worry dogs eat crap and re-eat there vomit and they are ok. Just as long as the turtle wasn't made of chocolate.
Probably won't get sick. She's not a bad dog, she does what dogs do .. They may get sick but get over it..

ReplyDeleteMY DOG AT HALF OF MY TURTLE TOO! OMG i thought she was chewing on her bone and i called her out from under the bed and my turtle comes running and his shell was half eaten off and i could see all of her intestines
