Our dog was a stray. He followed my daughter home. He was given a whole lot of crap by the people in the neighborhood. He turns his nose up to his dry food and only eats it when he is absolutely hungry. It takes him a day and a half to finish his bowl which holds 1 cup to 1-1/2 of food. The vet says that dry food is best for him but is it good for him refuse food and only eat when he's desparetly hungry?
Answers:
Easy, don't leave his food down all the time, have 2 times a day for feeding him, give him no more than 10 mins to eat it, having said that, if he walks away from it then take it away and DO NOT offer anymore food until the next time you have decided on (for instance I feed my dogs at 7am and 6pm they don't get anything in between except the occasional chew of some kind and only then if they are eating properly, if they walk away they don't get anymore grub until their next feed), a dog will not starve believe me, you mustn't weaken though, you sometimes have to be really tough especially when the big eyes look up at you and then they sit where you keep their food! You mustn't let a dog dictate to you, remember you are pack leader!
Bil Jac is supposed to be the best food, and every picky dog I've ever seen loves it.
i have a rescue corgi that when i first got him he wonted eat anything just human food or wet food. the people that had him before only gave him wet food or left overs. so what i did is though out the day i only put down dry food then at night i would put in half of can of wet food in with the dry food any slowing decreased the amount of wet food. now he eats regular dry dog food.
My Jack russell likes Moist n Meaty and she is a picky eater its moist and kinda dry and good for dogs

I have a feeling if you asked your vet this question, the answer would be, "Your dog won't let himself starve."
He's going to eat, but in order for him to get used to the fact that he has only dry food to eat, that's *all* you can give him. He won't starve himself. Just leave the dry food there and let him eat when he wants to. Eventually he'll get used to the fact that dry dog food is all he's going to get, and then y ou can put him on an eating schedule if you want -- where you give him a bowl of food at a certain time of day and give him half an hour, say, to eat his fill.
If he's still turning his nose up at the dry food you're giving him, try a different one. Try finding one that is high in what he needs -- a lot of the ones you get at the grocery store are full of junk. Ask your vet which brand he recommends and go with that.
Good luck!
No dog will deliberately starve to death if food is available to them. He obviously had gotten used to a certain diet and prefers not to have it changed. The only way to break the habit is not give in.
i would say to just keep feeding him dry food, even if he only eats it when he is desparetly hungry.
He will eventually start eating it more often once he realizes that is the only kind of food he is going to be getting.
Good luck!
*WHY*are you letting a pea-brain DOG dictate what it'll EAT?? What a wimp.
Did you let your kid refuse everything but ICE CREAM?
GROW A SPINE!!
Feed ONLY dry *adult* feed !! It will NOT starve!!
